John Lennon resurrected for charity ad

John Lennon is appearing in a charity public service announcement 28 years after his death.

The former Beatle has urged support for a campaign to get “One Laptop per Child” for the world’s poorest kids.

Through digital technology, he has appealed for help to deliver the tough, solar-powered XO laptop computers.

A voice and video image of Lennon has been created to say: “Imagine every child no matter where in the world they were could access a universe of knowledge.

“They would have a chance to learn, to dream, to achieve anything they want. I tried to do it through my music, but now you can do it in a very different way.”

“You can give a child a laptop and more than imagine, you can change the world,” says the musician.

This isn’t the first time a celebrity has been integrated digitally for commercial means: Fred Astaire danced with a vacuum cleaner during a Super Bowl ad, and Elvis Presley and Muppets mastermind Jim Henson have also posthumously appeared in commercials.

The ad was created by Taxi, New York, which was given permission to use Mr. Lennon’s image free of charge by his widow, Yoko Ono.

The One Laptop Per Child Association, Inc. (OLPC) is a U.S. non-profit organization set up to oversee the creation of an affordable educational device for use in the developing world. Its mission is “To create educational opportunities for the world’s poorest children by providing each child with a rugged, low-cost, low-power, connected laptop with content and software designed for collaborative, joyful, self-empowered learning.” Its current focus is on the development, construction and deployment of the XO-1 laptop. D+caf: The caffeine detector

I love coffee. It makes me do stupid things faster with more energy!

But for those who are cautious about their caffeine intake, comes a new product that can test if you’re drinking real coffee instead of decaf.

d+caf caffeine detector

D+caf test strips are simply little strips of paper coated with antibodies. You take the test strip and you dunk it in the coffee and it takes a minute to let you know if it’s decaf or not. The antibodies in the strip produce colored lines if the sample contains caffeine.

The strips are 98 percent accurate for detecting caffeine, plus you have to use them before you add anything else to your beverage, like milk or sugar.

d+caf caffeine detector

Some notes from the product page:

• D+caf™ Test Strips enable you to test the caffeine concentration of coffee and tea.

• 20 single-use test strips

• 98% accurate for detecting “NON-DECAFFEINATED” beverages - above 20 mg caffeine per 6 oz. serving

• D+caf™ is a lateral flow immunoassay, similar to the technology used in home pregnancy tests

• D+caf™ Test Strips can be used on hot or cold beverages

• Produces a result in as little as 30 seconds

• Test beverage before adding milk, cream, powdered creamers, syrups or other additives

Cardinal recommends Twitter for prayer

The head of the Roman Catholic Church in Ireland has urged believers to send their prayers the modern way.

Cardinal Sean Brady, speaking at a Mass in County Mayo on Sunday, urged social network users to start sending daily prayers by text, Twitter or e-mail.

The cardinal made the appeal as he unveiled a statue of Fr. Patrick Peyton, known as “the Rosary Priest”.

Peyton, a priest of the Congregation of the Holy Cross, founded the Family Rosary Crusade for which he coined the famous slogan “The family that prays together, stays together.”

“In the name of Fr. Peyton, I appeal to every Christian in Ireland today who sends texts, Twitters or uses e-mail to think about setting up groups of prayer between you and your friends using these modern means of communication,” said the cardinal.

“I ask young people in particular to think of sending their friends and family an occasional Twitter or text to say that you have prayed for them.”

Peyton lived in the Philippines for a long time, promoting prayer and devotion to the Blessed Virgin. He died in 1992 and is now on his way to sainthood.

Joey Velasco, a Filipino painter and sculptor, made the seven-foot bronze sculpture of the Irish priest.

TIME names Christopher ‘moot’ Poole the most influential person in the world

time-100-most-influential-people

Time Magazine has named 4chan.org founder Christopher Poole (a.k.a. moot) the most influential person in the world.

The 21-year-old college student garnered 16,794,368 votes and an average influence rating of 90 (out of a possible 100) to beat the likes of Barack Obama, Manny Pacquiao and Stephen Colbert.

But according to Erick Schonfeld of TechCrunch, the magazine’s annual online poll of the top 100 most influential people in government, science, technology and the arts was flooded with fake votes by followers of 4chan.

Not only did moot’s followers manage to get his name to the top of the Time 100 reader’s list, they also manipulated the next 20 spots. If you take the first letter of each name, it spells out the cryptic message, “Marblecake, also the game.” (See image below).

According to a tip, marblecake was also the name of the chatroom “where Project Chanology was born (4chan’s war against Scientology).”

Last year, Japanese video game designer Shigeru Miyamoto topped the list.
