Probable swine flu case closes Rockville High

Rockville High School is closed “until further notice,” officials announced late Thursday, because authorities have reported a probable case of swine flu involving a student.

The student would be the ninth person in Maryland preliminarily diagnosed with the virulent disease.

Eight states closed schools Wednesday, affecting 53,000 students in Texas alone, and President Barack Obama said wider school closings might be necessary to keep crowds from spreading the virus.

The H1N1 influenza has killed more than 150 people in Mexico and a toddler in the United States. Health officials predicted the child would not be the last U.S. death from the potential pandemic.

The student with the flu diagnosis has not been in class since Monday.

School officials said they were alerted to the case at about 6:30 p.m. yesterday and said they must gather more information to determine how long the school will remain closed.
