Two American journalists detained in North Korea are to be put on trial on charges of illegal entry and unspecified “hostile acts”, a state-run news agency has reported.

Reporters Euna Lee and Laura Ling of the San Francisco-based Current TV were arrested on March 17 while reporting on North Korean refugees in China. They were arrested at a time of heightened tensions over preparations for a long-range missile launch.

Lee and Ling are allowed consular contact and their treatment was governed by international laws while the investigation was underway, according to the Korean Central News Agency.

The agency did not say when the trial would take place.

If found guilty, the two women could face five years in one of Kim Jong Il’s notorious labor camps.

Washington has said it is working to secure the release of the journalists.
