A court has lifted a ban on identifying the man behind Australia’s deadly bushfires, despite fears of possible attacks by angry residents.
The suspect, Brendan Sokaluk, a 39-year old man was named after the court lifted the ban to conceal his identity. An order banning the publishing of his address or his image is still in effect.
Prosecutors say Brendan Sokaluk deliberately set a fire in Churchill, Victoria, on February 7. He was charged with arson resulting to the death of at least 21 people in Gippsland.
The 39-year-old was not in court to hear the judge lift the suppression order which kept his identity a secret.
Despite the ban, some Facebook users still posted the suspects’ identity.

At least three Facebook groups have been created to name the alleged arsonist, who it has emerged was a volunteer firefighter.
Reports says 189 people are now known to have died in the dozens of bushfires that swept Victoria earlier this month.
