Chimp shot dead after attacking woman (Video)

A 200 pound pet chimpanzee was shot and killed by police Monday after it attacked a woman visiting its owner.

Capt. Richard Conklin of the Stamford police said the victim; Charla Nash is in serious condition. She had suffered “a tremendous loss of blood” from serious facial injuries.

Sandra Herold, owner of the 15-year-old chimp named Travis, wrestled with the animal after it mauled her friend.

“She retrieved a large butcher knife and stabbed her longtime pet numerous times in an effort to save her friend, who was really being brutally attacked,” Conklin said.

Paramedics then arrived to treat Nash, with police officers protecting them, but the chimp started attacking.

A police officer shot Travis several times when he ripped off a side mirror and tried to enter a police cruiser, Conklin added.

The animal returned to its owner’s house, where it was later found dead.

Travis was well known in Stamford because he starred in TV commercials for Old Navy and Coca-Cola when he was younger.

TODAY’s Matt Lauer talks to Capt. Conklin and NBC’s Jeff Rossen about the attack.
