Police are now investigating the death of a 17-year-old student who apparently leapt through a window of a prestigious Manhattan school Wednesday morning.
The teen died after hitting the ground below, the New York Daily News reports.
According to authorities, the male student fell out of an 11th Floor window and landed on the pavement in front of the elite Upper East Side Dalton School.
Investigators believe he went into an empty dance studio on the school’s 11th floor, opened the top portion of the window and jumped, police sources said.
“I heard a loud bang,” said Dalton security guard Michael Brown, who was on the street when the body fell. “It sounded like a gunshot…he was just dead.”
The boy has not been identified but investigators said he was a student at the private school.
The incident was also witnessed by a group of kids playing on E. 89th St., which had been closed for their recess.
“The fourth graders were out here [and] everybody started running away from the body,” Brown added.
The Dalton School is a member of both the New York Interschool and the Ivy Preparatory School League. Over the years, the Dalton Plan has been adopted by schools around the world. Its notable alumni include actors Claire Danes and Chevy Chase as well as CNN anchor Anderson Cooper.
