Roger Federer was reduced to tears Sunday in the final stage of the Australian Open as top ranked Rafael Nadal handed him another defeat.

Nadal’s 7-5, 3-6, 7-6 (3), 3-6, 6-2 victory denied Federer’s bid to equal Pete Sampras‘ record 14 Grand Slam singles titles. The epic battle lasted for 4 ½ hours– the longest match in the tournament’s history.

“Maybe I’ll try later. God, it’s killing me,” Federer said, sobbing. He returned to congratulate Nadal within minutes, saying: “You deserved it. You played a fantastic final.”
Rafa received the trophy and put his arm around Roger.

“Roger, sorry for today… I really know how you feel right now,” the Spaniard said. “Remember, you’re a great champion, you’re one of the best in history.”
