A strong earthquake measuring 7.0 on the Richter scale struck off the coast of Indonesia early Thursday, geologists said.
The quake hit the country’s Sulawesi island but there were no immediate reports of damage or injuries.
The epicenter was located about 320 kilometers north-northeast of the town of Manado, the US Geological Survey said.
The USGS initially put the quake at a magnitude of 7.5, but later revised it down to 7.0.
Two aftershocks were reported, one measuring magnitude 5.9 and the other 5.6.
The US Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said there had been no threat of a widespread destructive tsunami.
Indonesia suffers frequent earthquakes due to its location on the so-called Pacific Ring of Fire. The Ring of Fire has 452 volcanoes and is home to over 75% of the world’s active and dormant volcanoes.
